Its a new year and everyone is thinking about their resolutions. Some of us might have even already broken and given up on them. I want to talk about my personal experience with resolutions.
When ever I talk to people about their resolutions I can usually tell who is going to be successful and who is doomed from the start. People who set and stick to their new years resolutions are very specific. They have clear time line, they pick achievable/ realistic goals, they work out a support system before starting, don't put undue pressure on set backs and most importantly they have a clear understanding of the steps necessary to be successful.
For example one of my new years resolution is to loose a little weight.
If I was the average person I would say to achieve this I am going to work out more and eat healthier. And I would probably be off track within the first few weeks.
A successful person would attack this goal by:
BEING SPECIFIC: After assessing where I am now (I am at about 14% BF) I would like to loose 5% BF which equates to around 8 pounds of weight loss
SETTING A TIME LINE: I am going to Cuba Feb 17th so that made my time line 7 weeks.
CREATING A PLAN: Its pretty much a matter of eating less calories and moving more. So I want to improve my diet by getting back to taking my fish oils, increasing my fibre intake, lowering my portions sizes and I printed out the work out program that I will be doing for the next 7 weeks.
CREATING A SUPPORT SYSTEM: I have talked to my wife and parents about what I am trying to achieve and they have already been more then a few occasions where they have helped to keep me from straying from my plan.
DON'T GET DISTRACTED: This one is tough for me. I am usually very hard on myself so when I acheive lower then my expectations I usually beat myself up. But with a little bit more wisdom my approach to failure is simply learn and move on. I have had a late Christmas party, a few family get together and some stressful long days. I haven't been perfect but I don't get hung up on being perfect, I have a plan and if I miss a step I just move on at the next meal or work out. No ones perfect!
You never climb a mountain in leaps and bounds, just one small step at a time.
I hope this helps, remember every day is an new chance to make a move in the right direction!
